The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) is an incarnation of the Doctor (preceded by Patrick Troughton and followed by Tom Baker), the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who.
Pertwee portrays a dapper man of action of stark contrast to his less action-oriented predecessors. For production reasons Pertwee’s stories initially depicted the Doctor stranded on Earth in exile, where he worked as a scientific advisor to the international military group UNIT. He gets through three companions, Liz Shaw, Jo and Sarah Jane Smith. This incarnation meets his demise and is regenerated in the story, The Planet of the Spiders.
